Corfu International Airport, Ioannis Kapodistrias (CFU)
Corfu International Airport, officially named Ioannis Kapodistrias (CFU), is the primary gateway for visitors to the island. It is located just 3 kilometers south of Corfu Town, making it extremely convenient for travelers. The airport is relatively small compared to other European hubs, but during the summer months it becomes very busy with charter and seasonal flights from all over Europe.
Airlines such as Aegean, Sky Express, Ryanair, EasyJet, TUI, and Lufthansa operate flights here, connecting Corfu with Athens, Thessaloniki, London, Rome, Paris, Munich and many other cities. Travelers should expect crowds between May and September, so it is wise to arrive early for check-in.
The airport has basic facilities including ATMs, car rental desks, a post office, a café, and duty-free shops. While functional, services can be limited during peak hours. It is advisable to bring water and snacks especially if traveling in high season, since queues may be long. Free Wi-Fi is available, though sometimes slow.
Transport to and from the airport is straightforward. Taxis are available outside the terminal; a ride to Corfu Town takes about 10 minutes and costs around 15–20 euros depending on traffic and luggage. Public buses (Line 15) connect the airport with the town center, the port, and some popular hotels. Car rental companies also operate directly at the terminal, including both international brands and local providers. Hiring a car is highly recommended if you want to explore the island’s villages, remote beaches, and mountain roads.
Parking facilities include short-term and long-term lots. For those picking up friends or family, the first 20 minutes are usually free. Long-term parking can be reserved online, especially useful in high season when availability is tight.
Accessibility & services: For travelers with reduced mobility, the airport provides assistance upon request, but it is essential to inform the airline ahead of time. Baby changing areas and basic medical services are also available.
Travel Tips
- If you are flying to Athens before heading home, note that flights are often delayed in summer because of the heavy air traffic.
- Always allow enough time between your domestic and international connections.
- For a smooth departure, check in online when possible and arrive at least 2 hours before your flight.
- If you arrive late at night, remember that public buses may not operate, so pre-booking a taxi or shuttle can save you stress.
In summary, Corfu International Airport is small but efficient, and while it cannot compete with the huge airports of Europe, it serves its role perfectly as the gateway to the island. With some planning, you can enjoy a smooth arrival or departure experience and begin your Corfu adventure without unnecessary hassle.
