🌿 The Emerald Island

Corfu didn’t earn the name Emerald Island by accident. Among the Ionian Islands, none can compete with its lush greenery — a tapestry of olive groves, wildflowers, and cypress trees cascading toward turquoise seas. Mountain cliffs drop into crystal-clear waters, and every turn reveals a new panorama of sun-kissed coastline.

For centuries, Corfu has inspired wonder — desired by empires, celebrated by travelers, and cherished by those who call it home. Even today, its landscapes and traditions keep the island’s magic alive.

🫒 Olive Trees & History

Over three million olive trees blanket the island — living monuments to Corfu’s Venetian heritage. Between the 14th–18th centuries, Venetians rewarded locals with gold coins for planting olives, ensuring oil to light the lamps of Venice. Walk beneath their silver leaves and you’ll feel the island’s connection between past and present.

🗺️ Geography & People

  • 📐 Area: ~590 km² • Length: ~62 km N→S
  • 🧭 Coastline: ~217 km of beaches, coves & dramatic cliffs
  • 🏝️ Size: 6th largest Greek island • 2nd in the Ionian group
  • 🏛️ Capital: Corfu Town (Kérkyra) — UNESCO-listed old town with Venetian, French & British influences
  • 👥 Population: ~120,000 (≈40,000 in Corfu Town, home to the Ionian University)

🏛️ Mythology & Inspiration

Corfu’s Greek name, Kerkyra, comes from the nymph Korkyra, daughter of the river god Asopos. Poseidon fell in love with her and brought her here, giving the island her name. Their son, Phaiax, became the ancestor of the Phaeacians from Homer’s Odyssey. It’s no surprise that writers and artists — from Gerald Durrell to Edward Lear — drew inspiration from the island’s unique light and spirit.

🌅 Modern Corfu

Whether you crave peaceful nature or lively nights, Corfu offers both. Enjoy tranquil olive-grove walks and hidden coves, or the buzz of tavernas, beach bars, and festivals that keep the island awake after sunset. Stroll the Liston promenade, watch the sunset from Pelekas or Loggas sunset beach in Peroulades, and explore villages like Kassiopi, Afionas, Sinarades and Benitses for authentic island life.
