π‘ A Hilltop Village with Some of the Best Views in Corfu
Afionas is one of the most beautiful traditional villages in northwest Corfu, sitting high above Agios Georgios Pagon Bay. Stone houses, narrow lanes, spectacular sea views, and unforgettable sunsets make it one of the most photographed villages on the island.
This area is personal for me. My home village is Kavadades, located only a few minutes away. As a child, every Sunday my parents would take me and my sister down to Agios Georgios Beach. Sometimes we walked through olive groves for around 40 minutes, and other times we squeezed into a neighbour’s old truck for the journey.
Today, Afionas remains one of the few villages in Corfu where you can still feel the atmosphere of old village life while enjoying some of the island’s most famous coastal scenery.
β¨ Why Visit Afionas Corfu?
Afionas is famous for three things:
β Traditional village atmosphere
β Amazing sunset views
β Porto Timoni Beach
If you prefer authentic villages over busy tourist resorts, Afionas is one of the best places in Corfu to spend a day or even use as a peaceful base.
π How to Get There from Corfu Town
Afionas is approximately 35 km from Corfu Town and Corfu Airport. The journey usually takes between 60 and 75 minutes depending on traffic and season.
The final section of the drive includes narrow roads and several bends. Drive carefully and avoid travelling here when tired, especially after a late flight.

π Porto Timoni: Corfu’s Famous Double Beach
Porto Timoni is one of the most famous natural attractions in Corfu. Located below Afionas, it consists of two beautiful bays separated by a narrow strip of land.
Although many visitors see it as a paradise beach, locals know that the sea here deserves respect.
When I was younger, I often visited Porto Timoni by pedal boat. One day I nearly drowned while trying to help a friend who got into trouble in the water. Since then, I never underestimate this coastline.
Children should always be supervised closely.
The water can become deep surprisingly quickly and conditions can change depending on wind and currents.
π₯Ύ Local Tips for Visiting Porto Timoni
As locals, one of the biggest mistakes we see visitors make is arriving too late.
Our advice is simple:
Arrive before 8:00β8:30 AM if possible.
By around 10:00 AM during July and August, both beaches can become extremely crowded.
Wear proper closed-toe walking shoes. The path is rocky and uneven, and flip-flops are not recommended.
Bring water, sun protection, and avoid carrying unnecessary weight.
The walk down is manageable, but the climb back to Afionas can feel much harder in the summer heat.
