Hidden in the countryside of central Corfu, away from the island’s busy beach resorts and crowded tourist streets, Kouramades is the kind of village many visitors drive past without ever discovering.
That may be about to change….
In August 2026, the small traditional Corfiot village suddenly attracted international attention when Madonna chose Kouramades as one of the places to celebrate her 68th birthday while holidaying in Corfu.
The Queen of Pop spent the evening with family and friends at Atzardo, a small traditional meze taverna in the village, enjoying an atmosphere that could hardly be further removed from luxury celebrity restaurants: homemade Corfiot food, a village courtyard, live music, traditional dancing and authentic local hospitality.

For those of us who know Corfu, this is perhaps the most interesting part of the story. Madonna could have chosen almost anywhere on the island, yet one of the world’s most famous entertainers ended up celebrating in a tiny traditional village.
Kouramades: A Traditional Village in Central Corfu
Kouramades is located in central Corfu, roughly 10–12 kilometres from Corfu Town, in an area surrounded by olive-covered countryside and traditional settlements.
It is a small village with a permanent population of only around 180 residents, retaining much of the atmosphere of old Corfu.
Its narrow lanes pass between traditional houses and old mansions, with bougainvillea, palms and Mediterranean plants adding colour to the village during the warmer months.
The village’s traditional central square is known as Foros. For generations it has been a meeting point for local residents and a place where gatherings and village events have taken place.
According to local accounts, the name Kouramades is associated with the fruit of a plant known locally as kouramo, which grew in the area.

A Village With Centuries of History
Kouramades is far more than a pretty collection of old houses. Archaeological findings and local historical records indicate that the wider area has been inhabited since ancient times.
The first documented references to Kouramades date back to around the middle of the 13th century.
During this period, the village became the administrative centre of a local district under the Despotate of Epirus, a role that continued under subsequent rulers of Corfu.
Another interesting chapter in the village’s history came after the fall of Constantinople, when members of the Chytiris family settled in the area. They were skilled craftsmen associated with the making of church bells and passed their knowledge through later generations.
Churches and Religious Heritage
Despite its small size, Kouramades has several churches and religious landmarks.
One of the most important is the Church of Agios Ioannis Kalyvitis.
At the entrance to the village stands the Church of Agios Panteleimon, which is traditionally dated to the 15th century.
On a small hill surrounded by cypress and pine trees is the monastery dedicated to Agia Kyriaki, offering another glimpse into the strong religious traditions of rural Corfu.

Important People From Kouramades
For such a small village, Kouramades has produced a surprising number of notable personalities.
Among them was writer and researcher Gerasimos Chytiris, whose extensive work documenting Corfiot culture and local history became an important contribution to the preservation of the island’s heritage.
The village was also associated with Archimandrite Eugenios Chytiris, who taught at the Flanginian School of the Greek community in Venice and later helped establish a school in Kouramades during the 19th century.
Former Greek ministers Telemachos Chytiris and Aristides Baltas also have roots in the village.
Then Madonna Came to Kouramades
In August 2026, Kouramades suddenly found itself in the international spotlight.
Madonna was in Corfu celebrating her 68th birthday with family members, friends and her partner Akeem Morris.
Rather than limiting her celebrations to luxury yachts and private villas, the singer also chose a much more traditional Corfiot experience: dinner in the village of Kouramades.
Her destination was Atzardo, a small traditional meze taverna where tables, local food and village hospitality create exactly the kind of atmosphere that many travellers hope to find when searching for the more authentic side of Corfu.

The restaurant had announced that it would remain closed to the public on August 15 and 16 before reopening on August 17.
Reports from the celebration described an evening filled with live music, Greek and Corfiot traditions and dancing. Local reports also said that the celebration included performances connected with the St Spyridon Choir and traditional Corfiot dancers from the cultural group Laodamas.
From Global Superstar to a Corfiot Village Taverna
There is something rather special about the contrast.
Madonna has spent decades performing in the world’s biggest arenas and attending some of the most exclusive events on the planet. Yet in Corfu, part of her birthday celebration took place inside a small traditional village surrounded by old houses, narrow streets and local residents.

It is also a reminder that some of Corfu’s most memorable experiences are not necessarily found at five-star resorts.
Sometimes they are found around a simple table in a village, sharing homemade food while musicians play nearby.
Atzardo: Traditional Food in Kouramades
Atzardo is a traditional meze restaurant in Kouramades specialising in homemade Greek and Corfiot-style dishes.
The emphasis is on the type of food that feels closer to a family kitchen than a typical tourist restaurant.
Depending on what is being prepared, dishes can include:
• Plemona – a traditional old-style dish made from offal.
• Boiled goat – a simple traditional dish that is still found in Corfiot and Greek village cooking.
• Beans slow-cooked in a clay pot – traditional comfort food prepared slowly in the oven.
• Sardeles pantremenes – literally “married sardines”, a Greek dish in which opened sardines are paired together with an aromatic filling.

• Courgette boureki – an aromatic baked dish made with zucchini and herbs.

• Gemista – traditional stuffed vegetables prepared with local ingredients.
• Local wild greens, including seasonal greens and other ingredients collected from the Corfiot countryside.
The menu can change according to season and availability, which is part of the charm of eating at this type of traditional village restaurant.

Combine Kouramades With Agios Gordios
Kouramades can easily be included in a drive through central and western Corfu.
One of the best combinations is to visit the village in the late afternoon and continue towards Agios Gordios, one of Corfu’s most scenic west-coast resorts and an excellent place to watch the sunset.

Why Kouramades Is Worth Visiting
Madonna’s visit will undoubtedly introduce Kouramades to people who may never previously have heard its name.
But the celebrity connection should not be the only reason to visit.
Kouramades represents another side of Corfu: old neighbourhoods, historic churches, village traditions, homemade food and evenings that still move at a very different pace from the island’s busy tourist resorts.
If Madonna’s birthday celebration brings a few more travellers into the inland villages of Corfu, perhaps that is not such a bad thing.
Just remember what made places like Kouramades special in the first place: come slowly, respect the village, support its small local businesses and enjoy the experience without trying to turn it into another tourist attraction.
