Some airports stand out for more than their destination: tight approaches, exposed runways, shifting weather or unusual surfaces can make arriving a demanding part of the journey. These places serve very different purposes, from remote research operations to island connections and mountain resorts.
The airports below follow the supplied list in reverse, from its lower positions towards its top selection. There is no universally accepted measure of the world’s “most dangerous” airports, and challenging conditions do not by themselves mean an airport is unsafe; routes, weather and operating procedures can change.
10Princess Juliana Airport, Saint Martin

Princess Juliana International Airport is famous for its low approach over Maho Beach on the Dutch side of Saint Martin. The runway sits close to the shoreline, making aircraft appear unusually near to beachgoers as they come in to land.
Visitors can watch from permitted public areas, but should obey signs and keep clear of restricted zones. Jet blast can cause serious injuries, so standing behind a fence or near the runway is not a safe way to get a closer view. Check flight and local transport information before making a special trip to the beach.
