The Greek islands are famous for beaches, whitewashed villages and endless blue seas, but some of their most memorable places are best discovered on foot. Beyond the busy resorts, old paths still cross mountains, olive groves, volcanic landscapes and tiny villages where life moves at a completely different pace.
Some islands are particularly rewarding for travelers who enjoy walking. And while several famous Cycladic islands immediately come to mind, one of Greece’s greenest islands offers a walking network that can take you across almost the entire island.
1Corfu – An Island You Could Spend Days Crossing on Foot
Most people arrive in Corfu looking for beaches, Corfu Town and famous resorts such as Paleokastritsa. But exploring the island on foot reveals the Corfu that many visitors never see.
The Corfu Trail stretches for roughly 220 kilometres across the island, linking landscapes that change dramatically from south to north.
The south offers beaches, wetlands and sandy coastal scenery. Central Corfu brings endless olive groves, villages and countryside, while northern Corfu becomes increasingly mountainous.
But you don’t need to walk the entire Corfu Trail to experience this side of the island.
Some of my favourite walks are much shorter.
The old paths around Lakones provide spectacular views above Paleokastritsa, while northern Corfu offers routes through traditional villages and towards Mount Pantokrator.
Old Perithia is another wonderful area to explore on foot. From this historic mountain village, the surrounding landscape feels completely removed from the busy resorts along the coast.
There are also countless smaller paths connecting villages, olive groves, tiny churches and viewpoints that rarely appear on standard tourist itineraries.
This is the Corfu I personally find most interesting.
Driving around the island allows you to see many places quickly. Walking forces you to slow down.
You hear the cicadas, pass through olive groves that have been cultivated for centuries, stop in villages you might otherwise drive straight through and discover views that aren’t marked as attractions on Google Maps.
And that may be the biggest reason to explore any Greek island on foot.
The destination is important — but sometimes the places you discover between the destinations become the best part of the trip.
