9Posca – The Soldiers’ Drink
Posca was a simple drink made by mixing water with sour or low-quality wine. Sometimes herbs or spices were added to improve the taste.
It was especially popular among Roman soldiers, workers, and poorer people because it was cheap and practical. Soldiers carried it during military campaigns because it was often safer than drinking untreated water.
Although posca is mostly connected with the Romans, similar watered-down wine drinks were common around the Mediterranean.
Worth knowing: Posca was not a luxury drink, but it helped soldiers and workers stay hydrated during difficult conditions.
