Summer may get most of the attention, but September and October can be two of the best months to experience Greece. The crowds begin to thin, temperatures become more comfortable, and many destinations reveal a completely different side once the peak summer rush is over.

There is another reason, however, why more experienced travelers are looking beyond July and August — and it may completely change the way you think about when to visit Greece.

1You Get More of the Greece People Actually Dream About

This may be the biggest reason of all.

Most people imagine a Greek holiday as slow breakfasts overlooking the sea, quiet walks through whitewashed villages, long lunches in family tavernas and afternoons discovering beaches without feeling rushed.

Ironically, during the busiest weeks of summer, that version of Greece can sometimes be harder to find.

September — and, in the right destinations, October — can bring much of it back. The weather can still be beautiful, the sea can remain inviting, but the pace begins to slow and there is more space to actually experience where you are.

Of course, autumn travel requires a little more flexibility. Weather becomes less predictable, ferry schedules can change, seasonal flight schedules are reduced and tourist businesses gradually begin to close.

But for travelers who don’t need guaranteed scorching temperatures every day, those trade-offs can be well worth it.

Perhaps the real secret isn’t discovering a different Greece at all. It’s visiting the Greece everyone wants to experience — just at a better time.
