Summer may get most of the attention, but September and October can be two of the best months to experience Greece. The crowds begin to thin, temperatures become more comfortable, and many destinations reveal a completely different side once the peak summer rush is over.
There is another reason, however, why more experienced travelers are looking beyond July and August — and it may completely change the way you think about when to visit Greece.

Peak summer demand has a major influence on the cost of traveling in Greece. Once the busiest weeks have passed, travelers can sometimes find better-value accommodation and more competitive travel options.
But there is an important catch for travelers visiting in October: seasonal flights. September is still firmly within the main summer flying season, so many Greek islands continue to have a wide choice of direct international and low-cost connections from European cities.
As October progresses, however, airlines gradually reduce their seasonal schedules. The European summer aviation season in 2026 ends on October 24, with the winter schedule beginning on October 25. This does not mean that every low-cost or seasonal route stops on exactly that date — some finish earlier, while others continue until the end of October or even longer.
This can make a big difference when choosing a destination. Islands that are extremely easy and inexpensive to reach in September may have far fewer direct international flights by late October. Travelers could then need to connect through Athens or another airport, adding both time and cost to the trip.
For this reason, anyone planning an island holiday in the second half of October should check both the outbound and return flight schedules before booking accommodation. Do not assume that a direct flight operating at the beginning of October will still be available several weeks later.
Major year-round destinations such as Athens and Thessaloniki are generally easier to reach throughout autumn, while domestic flights and ferries can provide alternatives for islands after some international seasonal routes have ended.
This does not mean that everything suddenly becomes cheap, and prices vary enormously between destinations. Popular islands and luxury properties can remain expensive well into September.
But travelers with flexible dates often have more opportunities to compare accommodation, flights and packages than they would during the height of August.
And there is another type of value that matters just as much: enjoying the same beautiful destination with fewer people around you.
