Summer may get most of the attention, but September and October can be two of the best months to experience Greece. The crowds begin to thin, temperatures become more comfortable, and many destinations reveal a completely different side once the peak summer rush is over.
There is another reason, however, why more experienced travelers are looking beyond July and August — and it may completely change the way you think about when to visit Greece.
5September Can Still Feel Surprisingly Like Summer
September does not automatically mean the end of summer in Greece.
In many southern and island destinations, warm days continue well beyond August, and the sea has spent the entire summer heating up. This means swimming and beach days can remain part of the holiday, particularly during September.
October is less predictable and varies considerably by region, but warm sunny periods can still occur, especially in southern Greece and on islands such as Crete and Rhodes.
Where is the weather usually best? If warm weather and the possibility of beach days are a priority, southern Greece generally offers the best chances as autumn progresses. Crete, Rhodes and the Dodecanese are among the strongest choices, while other southern Aegean destinations can also remain pleasantly warm well into the season.
September is still a good beach month across much of Greece, including many Ionian and Aegean islands. By October, however, the difference between regions becomes more noticeable. Southern islands such as Crete and Rhodes generally have a better chance of warm, sunny conditions, while northern Greece and the Ionian Islands can experience more changeable weather and an increasing chance of rain.
That doesn’t mean October guarantees sunshine even in southern Greece. Autumn weather can change quickly, so travelers planning primarily for swimming and beaches should keep their itinerary flexible and check the forecast shortly before travelling.
The advantage is that visitors can combine beach time with sightseeing rather than planning their entire day around the heat.
