Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.
10Issos Beach
Issos is one of Corfu’s most spectacular natural beaches, with huge sand dunes and Lake Korission immediately behind the coastline.
It is also one of the island’s best-known areas for wind and kite sports.
The beach is exposed to the open sea and summer winds can become considerably stronger during the afternoon.
When wind and waves increase, swimming conditions can become more demanding and water movement can be more noticeable.
The huge size of Issos also means that some parts feel extremely isolated even during summer.
Swimming tip: If kite surfers and windsurfers are enjoying perfect conditions, those same conditions may not necessarily be ideal for an inexperienced swimmer.
