Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.
9Arkoudilas
Arkoudilas, near Kavos in southern Corfu, is one of the island’s wildest beaches.
The beach is long and sandy, with dramatic cliffs behind it and relatively limited facilities.
The water can remain shallow for a short distance before the seabed drops much more sharply.
There are also local reports of strong underwater currents when sea conditions become rougher.
Its exposed and relatively remote character means this is a beach where I would always be cautious if the sea is unsettled.
Swimming tip: If you notice yourself being moved sideways or away from your original position, return towards shallow water rather than continuing farther offshore.
