Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.
2Avlaki Beach
Avlaki, near Kassiopi in northeast Corfu, often looks exceptionally calm because of its clear water and beautiful white-pebble shoreline.
However, appearances can sometimes be misleading.
The water becomes deep relatively quickly in places, and wind, waves and currents can change conditions inside the open bay.
I would not recommend swimming far offshore simply because the water is transparent. This is especially important for visitors who are not strong swimmers.
Sea shoes are also useful because of the pebble beach and seabed.
Swimming tip: Look at the movement of anchored boats and floating buoys before entering. They can sometimes reveal stronger water movement that is difficult to notice from the beach.
