Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.

Porto Timoni below Afionas is one of Corfu’s most photographed natural attractions.

The unusual double beach has two bays facing different directions, which means conditions on one side can sometimes be different from conditions on the other.

The water close to shore can initially be relatively shallow but becomes deep fairly quickly.

Porto Timoni is also completely unorganised. There is no normal beach infrastructure, so visitors should bring water and everything else they need.

If one side of the double beach is being affected by wind or waves, check the other side before swimming.

Swimming tip: Do not let the incredible clarity of the water fool you into thinking it is shallow.
