San Francisco’s spectacular location is partly the result of the same geology that makes the region vulnerable to earthquakes.
The San Andreas, Hayward and Rodgers Creek fault systems are among the major faults affecting the wider San Francisco Bay Area.
The city was devastated by the famous 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires, while the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake provided another reminder of the region’s seismic risk.
The risk varies greatly depending on location. Areas built on softer ground or artificial fill can experience stronger shaking and liquefaction compared with areas sitting on firmer rock.
Traveller tip: Never run outside while buildings, glass or masonry are falling. In most situations the recommended response indoors is Drop, Cover and Hold On.
