Although many visitors think of Colombia mainly for its colonial cities, coffee region and Caribbean coast, the country is influenced by complex tectonic processes linked to the Nazca and South American plates.
Strong earthquakes can affect or be felt across major urban areas, causing understandable concern for both residents and travellers.
Bogotá is included here because it is the main gateway city for international visitors and because any major seismic event in Colombia immediately becomes highly relevant to tourists moving around the country.
