A flat tyre on a Greek island, a minor collision, a lost key, the wrong fuel or even an animal suddenly running into the road — rental car problems can happen when you least expect them. If something goes wrong while driving in Greece, don’t panic. Here is what tourists should do in 10 common rental car emergencies, who to call and which mistakes to avoid.
8Your Rental Car Breaks Down
If the car suddenly loses power, will not start or develops a mechanical problem, try to move it away from moving traffic if this can be done safely.
Switch on your hazard lights and place yourself and your passengers somewhere safe.
Then call the roadside-assistance number supplied by the rental company. You will usually find it on the rental agreement, key tag, windscreen sticker or rental company’s website.
Do not allow an unknown garage to repair or tow the vehicle unless your rental company has authorised it.
This is especially important on the Greek islands or in rural areas where somebody may offer to “fix it quickly” for you. A well-intentioned repair could later create a dispute with the rental company’s insurer.
Save the exact location of the vehicle in Google Maps so you can send or describe it to roadside assistance.
