Summer may get most of the attention, but September and October can be two of the best months to experience Greece. The crowds begin to thin, temperatures become more comfortable, and many destinations reveal a completely different side once the peak summer rush is over.

When temperatures become more comfortable, a trip to Greece doesn’t necessarily have to mean spending an entire week on one beach or one island.

Athens can be combined with an island, Corfu with mainland Epirus, Thessaloniki with northern Greece, or Crete with several completely different landscapes and historic towns.

Driving, sightseeing and walking become easier, making early autumn particularly attractive to independent travelers who prefer exploring several places during the same trip.
