Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.

Glyfada is one of Corfu’s best-known west-coast beaches and is usually an excellent place for swimming.

The sandy entrance is relatively gentle in many sections, but Glyfada faces the open Ionian Sea.

When west-coast winds increase, waves can become considerably stronger and currents may also become more noticeable.

This is one of those beaches where a calm morning does not necessarily guarantee an equally calm afternoon.

Fortunately, Glyfada is organised during the main season, so always pay attention to lifeguard instructions and warning flags.

Swimming tip: If waves begin increasing noticeably, keep young children close to the shoreline even if they were swimming comfortably earlier in the day.
