Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.
5Myrtiotissa
Myrtiotissa is one of Corfu’s most beautiful wild beaches, hidden beneath dramatic green cliffs on the west coast.
The water is exceptionally clear but becomes deep relatively quickly.
Its open position towards the Ionian Sea also means that stronger westerly weather can bring surf, swell and currents into the cove.
Facilities are limited compared with larger organised beaches, so swimmers should be more conservative when conditions are unsettled.
Swimming tip: Calm mornings are often the best time to enjoy Myrtiotissa. If the west wind begins increasing, reassess the sea before swimming farther out.
