Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.

7Ermones

Ermones is a small and dramatic beach surrounded by steep green hills and cliffs.

One of the main things swimmers should know is that the water can become deep relatively quickly after entering the sea.

This makes Ermones attractive to confident swimmers, but parents with young children and people who are uncomfortable in deeper water should remain close to shore.

The surrounding hills make the bay look very protected, but swell from the Ionian can still reach the beach.

Swimming tip: If you are not a confident swimmer, check how quickly the seabed drops before moving away from shore.
