Corfu is famous for its clear turquoise sea, but swimming conditions are not the same everywhere around the island. Some beaches become deep surprisingly close to shore, while others can develop stronger waves or currents when the wind increases. This is especially important on exposed parts of the west coast, although there are beaches elsewhere on the island where swimmers should also pay attention. Here are 10 Corfu beaches where it is worth checking the depth, wind and sea conditions before swimming.

Chomi, widely known as Paradise Beach, is one of the most spectacular sections of Corfu’s western coastline.

It is reached by sea and sits beneath enormous vertical cliffs.

The intensely blue water is beautiful, but parts of the seabed become deep very quickly.

The boat-only location is another reason to take weather conditions seriously. If the wind or swell begins increasing, leaving is not as simple as walking back to your car.

Visitors should also follow any current restrictions relating to access below the cliffs because of rockfall risk.

Swimming tip: Ask the boat operator about the day’s conditions before setting off rather than relying only on a general weather forecast.
