If something goes wrong while driving in Greece, don’t panic. Here is what tourists should do in 10 common rental car emergencies, who to call and which mistakes to avoid.
6You Hit a Dog, Cat or Another Animal
This is one situation tourists rarely think about before driving in Greece.
If you hit an animal, stop safely and do not simply continue your journey.
Greek official guidance states that a driver who strikes an animal must immediately notify the Hellenic Police so the incident can be recorded and the necessary safety measures can be taken.
Call 100, or use 112 if there is an immediate danger or another emergency at the scene.
Do not rush towards an injured animal. A frightened dog, cat or wild animal may bite or scratch because it is in pain or shock.
If possible, save the exact location and observe the animal from a safe distance while waiting for instructions.
If the animal runs away, still record the location. It may be injured nearby.
If an animal has been killed and remains in the road, warn the authorities. Official Greek guidance states that a dead animal should not be left creating another traffic danger, but never put yourself in danger by walking into moving traffic to remove it.
Greek authorities also warn that abandoning an injured animal following a road accident can result in a €500 administrative fine.
After dealing with the animal and the authorities, inform the rental company about any damage to the vehicle.
