5You Find Damage to the Car While It Was Parked
You return from the beach or restaurant and discover a scratched door, damaged bumper or broken mirror — but the other vehicle has disappeared.
Before moving the rental car, photograph the damage and the surrounding area.
Look for nearby businesses, hotels or parking areas that may have CCTV, and check whether anyone witnessed what happened.
Contact your rental company and explain that the car was damaged while parked.
If the damage appears to be the result of a hit-and-run, vandalism or attempted theft, ask the rental company whether they require a police report and follow their instructions.
Do not wait until you return the car several days later to mention the damage. Reporting it immediately creates a much clearer record of what happened.
