9Paleokastritsa and Its Dramatic Scenery
Paleokastritsa is one of Corfu’s most famous destinations and is known for its dramatic cliffs, green hills, sea caves and several beautiful bays.
The area offers some of the clearest water on the island and is particularly popular for swimming, snorkelling and boat trips. Small boats take visitors to caves, hidden beaches and coastal areas that cannot easily be reached by road.
Above the coastline stands the historic Monastery of Paleokastritsa, which offers impressive views across the Ionian Sea. Nearby viewpoints around Lakones and Bella Vista provide panoramic views over the entire area.
My local recommendation: After Paleokastritsa, drive to Makrades, which is often described as Corfu’s herbal village because of its small shops selling local herbs, olive oil, honey and traditional products.
If you still have energy and are comfortable on narrow roads, continue along the descending road from the wider Makrades area towards the north-west coast. At several points, the view opens towards Agios Georgios Pagon, Afionas and Porto Timoni, with the Diapontia Islands appearing in the distance on a clear day.
The road is narrow, winding and not suitable for nervous or inexperienced drivers. It is generally easier with a small vehicle or scooter than with a large car, but scooter riders should only attempt it if they are experienced and comfortable with steep bends.
Parking and traffic around Paleokastritsa can become difficult during July and August, so I recommend arriving before 10:00 or visiting later in the afternoon.
