10Visiting Paxos Without Planning How to Get Around

Harami Beach & Lakka Bay

A day trip from Corfu to Paxos can be one of the highlights of a holiday, but visitors sometimes assume that it will be easy to travel between Gaios, Loggos, Lakka, Mongonissi and the island’s beaches after arriving.

Paxos is small, but many beaches and rural locations are not within comfortable walking distance of the main port. Local buses follow specific routes and schedules rather than operating continuously, while taxis and rental vehicles may be in high demand during July and August.

How to improve the experience: Decide before travelling whether you want a boat excursion with a fixed programme or an independent visit. If travelling independently, check the return ferry time, local bus schedule and transport options before leaving Corfu.

Reserve a rental car, scooter-free alternative or taxi in advance if you want to explore several parts of Paxos. Do not attempt to fit Gaios, Lakka, Loggos, Antipaxos and the west-coast caves into a short visit without organised transport.

Most importantly, leave enough time to return to the port. Missing the last ferry can result in an unexpected overnight stay and may also affect a flight or hotel booking in Corfu.
