2Getting Trapped in Heavy Summer Traffic
Corfu’s road network was not designed for the number of vehicles using it during the peak summer season. Traffic can become especially heavy around Corfu Town, Kontokali, Gouvia, Dassia, Perama and the main roads leading to popular northern resorts.
A journey that appears short on the map can take considerably longer because of buses, delivery vehicles, roadworks, narrow sections and cars parked beside the road. There have been reports from visitors of journeys taking more than twice as long as expected during particularly busy periods.
How to improve the experience: Avoid unnecessary driving between approximately 17:00 and 20:00, especially on the roads approaching Corfu Town. Check live traffic conditions before leaving and never plan an airport transfer or ferry connection using the fastest estimated journey time.
Always leave a generous safety margin. A distance of only 25 or 30 kilometres in Corfu does not necessarily mean a quick journey.
