1Corfu Old Town and Its Venetian Architecture

Corfu is best known for its beautifully preserved Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with narrow streets, elegant buildings and centuries of history.

The historic centre was strongly influenced by the Venetians, who ruled the island for more than four centuries. Visitors can walk through the famous kantounia, the narrow cobbled streets lined with colourful buildings, small balconies, traditional shops and hidden courtyards.

One of the most recognisable areas is the Liston Promenade, with its elegant arcades and cafés overlooking Spianada Square. The Old and New Fortresses, historic churches, museums and impressive mansions make Corfu Town feel very different from most other Greek island capitals.

My local recommendation: Do not finish your visit after walking around Liston and the Old Town. Continue towards Garitsa Bay, one of my favourite waterfront walks, with beautiful views of the Old Fortress. From there, you can visit the gardens and historic estate of Mon Repos before continuing to Kanoni for the famous view of Vlacherna Monastery, Mouse Island and the aircraft landing just above the lagoon.

Corfu Old Town is especially beautiful early in the morning or in the evening, when the streets are cooler, quieter and illuminated by warm light.

Over the years, Corfu has attracted writers, artists, actors, musicians, members of royal families and many other famous visitors. Its combination of natural beauty, historic architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere continues to give the island a strong international appeal.

Despite its popularity, Corfu still has quiet villages, peaceful countryside and lesser-known coastal areas where visitors can experience a more authentic side of the island.
