2The Durrells, Famous Visitors and Corfu’s International Appeal
Corfu became internationally famous through the books of British author and naturalist Gerald Durrell, who lived on the island with his family during the 1930s.
His book My Family and Other Animals describes the family’s experiences, the island’s wildlife and the colourful people they met. The story later inspired films and television productions, including the popular series The Durrells.
Gerald’s brother, writer Lawrence Durrell, also wrote about the island in Prospero’s Cell.
Visitors interested in the family’s story should travel to Kalami on the north-east coast to see the famous White House. The waterfront building is particularly associated with Lawrence Durrell and stands directly beside the beautiful bay.
The White House is not a conventional public museum, and access may depend on the current use of the property. However, visitors can see its exterior from the bay and enjoy a walk, swim or meal beside the water.
