4Philharmonic Bands and Corfu’s Musical Tradition
Music plays an important role in Corfiot culture. The island is famous for its philharmonic bands, choirs, music schools and long tradition of public performances.
The first philharmonic society in Corfu was established during the 19th century. Today, numerous bands operate in Corfu Town and in villages throughout the island.
The three best-known philharmonic societies in Corfu Town are:
- The Philharmonic Society of Corfu, commonly known as the Old Philharmonic.
- The Mantzaros Philharmonic Society.
- The Capodistrias Philharmonic Union.
The bands participate in religious processions, national celebrations, village festivals and major cultural events. Their performances are especially important during Easter, when musicians accompany processions through the historic streets of Corfu Town.
Visitors may also encounter free concerts, choir performances and village celebrations throughout the year. Learn more about the island’s music and philharmonic bands.
For us locals, the bands are not performances created only for tourists. Many Corfiot children begin learning instruments at a young age, and entire families may be connected with the same philharmonic society for generations.
