After several visits, relationships with local people often develop beyond ordinary tourist hospitality.
Accommodation owners watch children grow from toddlers into adults. Restaurant staff remember birthdays, anniversaries and stories from previous holidays.
Some visitors remain in contact with local friends throughout the winter. They exchange messages, Christmas greetings and photographs, and occasionally help one another when a problem arises.
