9Agios Mattheos – Stone Mansions & Colourful Village Homes
Best for: traditional houses, churches, narrow streets and combining a village visit with nature.
Agios Mattheos is one of the larger traditional villages in southern Corfu and has much more to explore than its main road.
Walk through the smaller streets and you will find old stone houses, colourful homes, wooden doors, balconies and steep alleys climbing through the village.
Where does the name Agios Mattheos come from?
The village takes its name from Saint Matthew. Local religious tradition also tells a story about travellers who were saved during a storm and later associated their mysterious helper with Saint Matthew.

Population: approximately 1,193 residents, according to the 2021 census.
Location: southwest Corfu.
From Corfu Town: approximately 22 km.
Best for: village streets, stone houses and old churches.
