11A Cleaner, Smarter and Better-Equipped Corfu Town
Rather than making Corfu Town traffic-free – much of the historic centre already is – we would invest in making the entire city exceptionally clean, comfortable and well organised for both residents and visitors.
We would introduce strict anti-littering rules, significantly increase enforcement and impose meaningful fines on people who throw rubbish in streets, parks, beaches or public spaces. Cleaning crews would operate throughout the day during the busy summer season, while more recycling points and attractive rubbish bins would be installed across the town.
One of the biggest improvements would be the construction of clean, modern and regularly maintained public toilets at strategic locations, including Spianada, the Old Port, San Rocco, Garitsa and other areas with heavy visitor traffic.
We would also install many more shaded public benches, particularly along walking routes and viewpoints. Some could feature solar-panel roofs providing shade while generating electricity, with built-in USB and wireless charging points allowing visitors to charge their mobile phones for free.
More drinking-water fountains, landscaped areas, trees, accessible pavements and better signage could complete the project, creating a cleaner, greener and much more visitor-friendly Corfu Town.
The idea would not be to change the character of the historic city, but to combine its unique architecture and atmosphere with the cleanliness, organisation and practical facilities expected from one of Greece’s most famous destinations.
