7Gastouri – Traditional Houses in the Shadow of the Achilleion
Best for: elegant traditional houses, courtyards, historic architecture and Sissi-related history.
Gastouri has a slightly more aristocratic character than many other Corfu villages.
Historic homes, balconies, courtyards and larger residences reflect the area’s connection with wealthy Corfiot families and, later, Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
Do not visit only the Achilleion. Walk through the quieter residential streets and you will discover another side of the village.
Where does the name Gastouri come from?
One explanation connects the name with workshops producing clay cooking vessels or pots, associated with the Greek word gastra.
